JC Barnett School of Jump Shooting Youth Basketball Company (JCYBC) is back in full swing with a new league. After a three-year hiatus, it has assembled several youth teams that will compete locally to develop skills and cultivate talent.
The last time Barnett and JCYBC held a youth league was the start of 2020, just before COVID ravaged the community and the entire world. It was the fourth league put together by the school, hosted by Taylor High School, and it was the largest and most impactful, serving more than 500 youth.
When all was said and done, JCYBC impacted more than 1,000 kids through the leagues by providing quality basketball in the city of Kokomo and surrounding areas.
In an effort to provide that same local developmental style of basketball, JCYBC is partnering with the Carver Community Center to run a youth exhibition league, which will span from May to August, starting on Wed., May 10. The first game will begin at 5:30 p.m. Admission for adults is $5, and $3 for students.
Youth participating in the exhibition league will be in 3-4th, 5-6th and 7-8th grade.
“For a number of years I’ve have developed relationships with coaches in the local area and beyond,” said Barnett. “I thought, for anyone who either can’t afford to go an hour south and play on weekends, or just doesn’t want to be committed to travelling for weeks on end, I can organize competitive exhibition games right here at home in the off season.
“I know I’m doing things the hard way. But I’m hardheaded, and focused. I know the impact this can have on the youth and the success local area teams can have from it.”
Despite the efforts Barnett and his cast of volunteers have put forth, the youth leagues would not be possible without the leadership and the willingness on the part of the Carver Community Center and its director, Donta Rogers.
“The Carver Community Center being the staple it is in the city of Kokomo, its only right that this youth establishment be our home base,” said Barnett. “I’m a Carver kid, as are so many others. Everything really began here for me in terms of playing hoops. There is an overwhelming sense of nostalgia to have my son and other youth play here to develop their game. I couldn’t be more grateful.”
He doesn’t take the credit for the success of any player or any program, but when Barnett looks back on those who benefited from JCYBC leagues, all he can do is smile.
“I look at what the Taylor High School boys’ varsity program did early on this past season, and what the Kokomo High School team accomplished,” said Barnett. “So many of those young men played in our leagues, and we know they are better players because of what we were able to provide for them. It is special to be a part of it.”
The league has no registration fee for any of the teams involved, but only teams may register. Individual registrations are not accepted. However, no youth will be turned away. Barnett is always seeking to expand the program, and he welcomes all who have a passion to play.
“Simply ask”, Barnett says, “and we will get you involved.”
