Community center offering chess club for all ages

It is known as "the game of kings." Chess, which has persisted for more than 1,000 years as one of the greatest games ever created, once was played only by royalty.
However, the popularity of chess has expanded across the world, and it is accessible to everyone. In Kokomo, the game is taking root at the Carver Community Center. Those seeking to show their strategic prowess or wanting to learn the game are welcome to take part, according to Carver Center executive director J.C. Barnett III.
"The game of chess is just an awesome game," said Barnett. "It does so many things for helping to develop thinking and strategizing. Young people should be getting into it.
"But we encourage people of all ages to come to this. It's not just a third through eighth grade class or an adult class. Chess is something where everybody can come together, regardless of age. We're hoping to develop some mentorship through it and to gain knowledge from people who have been a part of it."
Barnett explained that long-time chess player and instructor Brandon Arnett is leading the sessions, teaching the basics to some while detailing more complex strategies to others, depending on the relative skills of the player.
Chess is a game that doesn't recognize boundaries. Some of the most prodigious chess minds in the world were grandmasters at the game in childhood. Gender provides no advantage or obstacle.
And, as Barnett is learning the hard way, chess provides lessons in humility as often as it does strategy.
"My son, who is 11, is beating me," said Barnett. "I mean, I've never been great at chess, but my son is the kind of kid who will dive deep into whatever it is he wants to be great at.
"He's playing. He's watching YouTube videos about chess. And he's been beating me."
The Carver Chess Club meets on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 4-6 p.m. at the Carver Community Center, 1030 N. Purdum St. The cost to participate is $10 per session or $15 per month. For additional information, visit the Carver Community Center Facebook page or call 765-457-9318.
