Every young athlete’s dream is to go to the next level and play college ball. That dream is becoming a reality for Eastern High School graduate Owen Taylor. The former Comet baseball star will be moving about the campus of Trine University in the Fall of ‘22 as a freshman, seeking to earn his stripes on baseball field when he takes the mound as a pitcher for the White Tigers program.
Taylor thoughtfully steps into the coming season with purpose and with a goal in mind. “My freshman year, goal wise, coach has a travel roster and a JV roster. I just want to make the travel roster,” he said.
Taylor has taken the sport of baseball seriously since middle school. He is unique within the game itself in the sense that it is not very often you find pitchers with true, direct, over-the-top deliveries. Most throw three-quarters and below for various reasons. For one, it is less strain on the arm, and a pitcher is likely to achieve greater velocity on the ball. Taylor has a different perspective on being an over-the-top pitcher.
“I may not throw as hard as other guys, but it’s a different look,” he said. “When you have a ball that is traveling six or seven feet downward, it’s harder to square and barrel it up. You might make contact, but it’ll be harder to hit it into the gaps. It’s different at three-quarters. It may have more velocity, but it kind of stays on that same plane all the way through.”
