For the first time in the 20-year history of “Doing the Dream,” Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo is offering a virtual opportunity to hear the keynote speech at the annual community banquet. This year’s speaker is award-winning author and social justice scholar Dr. Monique Couvson.
The livestream will be available starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 25, on the Ivy Tech Kokomo YouTube channel or by clicking below.
“As has always been the case, our ‘Doing the Dream’ events represent the beginning of an ongoing conversation that the College would like to engage in with the communities we serve,” said Dr. Ethan Heicher, chancellor of Ivy Tech’s six-county Kokomo Service Area.
“While the annual banquet brings together a wide range of community leaders for an evening of inspiration and community-building, we know not everyone who could benefit is able to come in person,” he continued. “We hope the free livestream will expand the audience and inspire even more area residents to be involved in the work of carrying on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”
In the spirit of “Doing the Dream,” Dr. Couvson will bring a challenging and encouraging message that will draw from her three decades of experience in the areas of education, civil rights, and juvenile and criminal justice. Dr. Couvson also will be facilitating a workshop for a select group of community and educational leaders on Friday, Jan. 26. Her book “Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools” will serve as the basis of the two-day community discussion.
Once again, Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) is speaker sponsor for the banquet, which annually brings leaders from throughout the community together with a distinguished speaker to address issues of local, state and national importance.
Additional sponsors include Community Howard Regional Health, Howard County Government, Security Federal Savings Bank, Ascension St. Vincent, The City of Kokomo, Community First Bank of Indiana, Duke Energy, Kokomo Common Council, Rozzi Catering, Silver Birch of Kokomo, and UAW Howard County CAP. In addition, a sponsorship from Ivy Tech’s office of Diversity, Equity and Belonging and a grant from the Community Foundation of Howard County helped make possible the community workshop scheduled for Friday.
