When thinking of Kokomo High School’s athletic all-time greats, the name Herman Fowler must be considered. Not only must he be mentioned in that conversation, he may be near or at the top.

Fowler, in his day as a Wildkat, was quite the decorated multisport athlete. As a football and basketball star, he was recognized in both on the state level. Fowler, who goes by the nickname “Worm,” was an All-State selection in football. In basketball, he was All-State as well as a 1998 Indiana Mr. Basketball candidate. When his time in high school ended, Fowler went on to college to play football at Indiana University as a linebacker.

As tremendous a talent Fowler was, it was deeper than the game for him. He stressed the importance of relationships and how they contributed to his sports career.

“It was more about being a part of a team,” said Fowler. “I still have friends that I talk to today; that I have had chemistry with from childhood, and we still have a relationship, because of sports.

“It was big for me. Coming up, I had mentors within sports. That was pretty much my foundation. PAL football at 8, 9, 10 years old. Having people there that care about you, to help you continue to grow as a young man through discipline [was important].”
