It’s the biggest day in comic books. The stories of Batman, Spider-Man, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more will be available on Sat., May 6, as part of Free Comic Book Day. In Kokomo, that party starts at Comics Cubed, 121 E. Sycamore St., from noon until 5 p.m.
Free Comic Book Day has been celebrated for decades. It is one day when comic book shops across the country team up with comic book publishers to give away comics to anyone who visits a participating shop on May 6, 2023. The annual event was founded upon the belief that there is a comic out there for everyone to love.
“Comics Cubed is a proud participant in Free Comic Book Day,” said owner Shawn Hilton. “We’ve been doing this every year. Our regular customers look forward to the event, but what we love most is that it gives the casual or first-time reader a chance to connect with great characters, amazing stories, and fantastic art – all for free!”
All the major comic book publishers offer books during Free Comic Book Day. DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite Entertainment, and Image Comics will have titles available, as well as a diverse selection of smaller publishers looking to make a splash in the industry.
And the comics offered won’t just be focused upon superheroes. Action, Horror, Western, Romance … There truly is a comic book out there for just about everyone, and on May 6, they’re free to anyone who wants them.
“One of the other great things about Free Comic Book Day is that it brings people to downtown Kokomo,” said Hilton. “Comics Cubed sits along East Sycamore Street, which is also known as ‘Geek Street’ thanks to the presence of several stores that cater to the geek in all of us, whether that’s toys, vintage vinyl records, novels, games, and of course, comic books.
“We love to meet new people who come to participate in Free Comic Book Day. We’ll see a lot of familiar faces, too. It’s really a great way to connect with fellow fans and celebrate the things we love about comics!”
Those wanting to get a free comic are encouraged to arrive early for best selection.
“The comics will be distributed so that everyone has a chance to get a book; we have a pretty good system,” said Hilton. “But you’ll definitely want to get here early to ensure you get the book or books you want.”
Free Comic Book Day will be celebrated in Kokomo at Comics Cubed, 121 E. Sycamore St., on Sat., May 6, from noon until 5 p.m. Following is a list of books that will be available at the event. Other books not listed may also be available. For additional information about Free Comic Book Day at Comics Cubed, call 765-450-4126 or visit the Comics Cubed in Kokomo Facebook page.

Duke Energy presents Kokomo Downtown Farmers Market
The Kokomo Downtown Farmers Market is back for its 22nd season, with the opening day on Sat., May 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. This year’s market season, which runs from May to September, will feature more than 40 vendors, including farmers, bakers, growers, makers, and non-profits.
Located at the corner of Washington and Mulberry streets in downtown Kokomo, the outdoor market is a great place to connect with local residents and discover fresh, locally grown produce, flowers, eggs, and meat, as well as baked and handmade goods from local and regional vendors such as Stiner’s Produce, Irvine Township Meats, Dragonwood, Wesson’s Canine Bakery, and Purple Phoenix Jewelry.
The market also offers a fun and festive atmosphere with live music from Fingers & Sunshine, Bel & the Bad Wolves, Medicinal Blue Grass, and Ivory Moss.
Each week, kids of all ages are invited to participate in Little Sprouts activities, such as planting, tasting veggies, meeting farmers, and coloring. Each participant receives a Little Sprouts buck that can be redeemed with any market vendor. At this weekend’s market, the Little Sprouts will plant sunflower seeds.
The market is an important access point for fresh locally grown food for almost half the year. It accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and doubles participants’ vegetable spending budget by $15 a week through the Double Bucks program.
The Kokomo Downtown Farmers Market also serves as a small business incubator where new entrepreneurial ideas are tested and grown. Many successful businesses, such as Etta’s Gooey Goodies in Greentown and Lucky Lemon Bakery in Kokomo, got their start at the market.
Keith Peterson, the market’s volunteer treasurer, expressed pride in the market’s role as an economic and entrepreneur generator for the community.
“The farmers market serves as an economic engine for the community, supporting small businesses and creating jobs while connecting consumers with the people who grow their food,” Peterson said.
Recognizing the value that local farmers markets bring to the community, Duke Energy serves as a major sponsor for the Kokomo Downtown Farmers Market.
“Duke Energy appreciates the value that local farmers markets bring to the community,” said Kevin Johnston, government and community relations manager for Duke Energy in northern Indiana.
