Garden Square ladies get a bit pampered
Housing Authority, Fade Salon offer free styling and facials to residents for Mother’s Day
Many mothers are blessed to have celebrations with their families on Mother’s Day. Some of them have the time and resources to spoil themselves with a spa day, or better yet, have someone to spoil them.
For many of the ladies living in the Kokomo Housing Authority’s (KHA) Garden Square Apartments, Mother’s Day turns out to be just another Sunday. Megan Henry, the KHA’s Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency Service Coordinator, wanted to change that. She spearheaded a special Mother’s Day event with the help of Fade Salon to pamper the Garden Square women.
“I wanted to do something to spoil our mothers a little bit since they have to do so much for themselves and their kids,” said Henry. “They probably neglect themselves with working, going to school, raising kids. I wanted to give them time to relax, work on themselves, and improve their mental health a little.
“Maybe it’s just an hour to get a haircut and style and a facial. It’s just something to make them feel a little better about themselves.”
Fade Salon owner Lindsey Ogle and seven of her stylists set up shop in the Garden Square community room on May 10 and provided haircuts and styling and facials to dozens of women. Ogle was proud of her stylists for stepping up.
“I did a post on our private team page, and there were seven people who volunteered,” said Ogle. “Some of them had actual shifts today at the salon, but they wanted to come here to volunteer their time. Typically, when it comes to volunteering, you wonder who will be willing to show up, but everyone was so excited and willing to help. I thought that was super-cool. Good teamwork!”
Ogle said she has known KHA director Derek Steele for years and thinks highly of him. When he mentioned the Mother’s Day event, she jumped at the opportunity to get involved.
“I can’t think of anything more fun for Mother’s Day than to spread good feelings to other women,” said Ogle.
