Gen Z’s deep need for mentorship
Gen Z is currently the largest generation globally and in the U.S. That fact alone makes their influence on the world undeniable. But what’s even more striking is the hunger this generation has for mentorship, not just career guidance or academic help, but for real, intentional life mentorship. Spiritual direction. Emotional support. Wisdom from those who’ve walked the road before them.
Think about that for a moment. For those of us who have some years under our belt, when we were growing up, how often did we go out of our way to find a mentor? For most, it was rare. We learned by trial and error. We stumbled through, and we figured things out the hard way. But this generation? They’re asking. They’re looking. They’re hoping someone will take the time to pour into them.
That’s where we come in.
Those of us who have been through a few storms, who have made some mistakes, and who have seen God’s faithfulness through it all, we are called to give back. Not just when it’s convenient. Not just when a young person “earns it.” No, the opportunity to guide, correct, or encourage a young person should never be wasted.
It’s not just good advice, it’s obedience. God has given us life experience not just to benefit ourselves, but to multiply His wisdom into others. When we stay silent, when we walk past a young person struggling, when we ignore the tug of the Spirit to speak up, we’re not just missing a chance, we’re failing to bring glory to God through our lives. Our silence speaks louder than our intentions ever could.
So, let us do better. Let us be better.
Let us rise up and walk in our purpose, not only by preaching the gospel, but by living it, daily, in front of a generation desperate to see it in action. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being present. Gen Z is watching. More importantly, they are waiting. Let’s show them what real love, real truth, and real mentorship looks like.
Not someday, today.
