Today is Halloween, but the holiday arrived early in Kokomo. For the past week, spooky parties, Trunk ‘N Treat candy hauls, and colorful costumes have swept across Howard County.
The music was flowing and so was the candy at Silver Birch of Kokomo on Oct. 27 as residents dressed up to welcome Kokomo trick-or-treaters who came to Silver Birch's Third Annual Trunk or Treat. According to Silver Birch Kokomo Executive Director Tony Stewart, more than 500 costumed creepies and pretty princesses lined up to get a warm greeting and some candy.
Residents and visitors were treated to the sounds of Hoosier Beat's DJ Service, cranking tunes such as Michael Jackson's "Thriller," and Bobby "Boris" Pickett's "Monster Mash." Some of the trick-or-treaters stuck around after getting their candy for an impromptu dance party with costumed Silver Birch staff, residents, and their families.
Later that evening, Century Villa Healthcare and Rehabilitation held a Halloween party and pet parade at their facility in Greentown. Residents, kids, costumed canines enjoyed music, fellowship, food, candies and treats, and cake walks.
Open to the entire community, the event attracted a gaggle of ghosts and goblins who marched in circles in the hope of taking home a holiday cake. The residents delighted as family came to visit, and the festively dressed pooches were a big hit. In fact, it was difficult to tell who was enjoying the evening more, the dogs or the people.
On the other side of Greentown, the community celebrated the season with a little trick-or-treating along the Scarecrow Trail near Eastern High School. Witches and superheroes flitted from table to table, scooping up candy and treats along the way.
In between each booth, offering candy or games, were a selection of scarecrows, assembled by local businesses to help celebrate the season.
There are plenty of Halloween activities planned across the community tonight. Check out the Lantern’s What’s Happening This Week? for some of those events. Trick or treating hours countywide are 5-8 p.m.
