Tractors, tigers, and rides. Oh my! The Howard County 4H Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Greentown July 10-15, and this year features “The Voice” finalist Emily Ann Roberts, the Royal Bengal Tigers Show, and Micro Wrestling, along with Granpa Cratchet, beauty pageants, the Midway rides and games, and the many 4H projects and livestock judging that are staples of the annual event.
The fair kicks off on Sun., July 9, with a flag-raising ceremony at 6:45 p.m. This is followed by an evening church service, featuring Cami Shrock with music and Pastor Nicky Farmer with the message. The service begins at 7 p.m. at the South Grandstands.
The bulk of the festivities comes online on Monday, July 10. The Pioneer Village welcomes visitors daily, with antique tractors, gas engines, and steam engines, threshing and baling machines, baking, fan running, a blacksmith, a sawmill, chair caning, wool spinning, food, old-fashioned corn shelling, a chain saw carver, candle dipping, and more. The Pioneer Village is sponsored by First Farmers Bank & Trust.
Granpa Cratchet sets up shop in the Pioneer Village as well, with shows daily at 5 p.m., 7 p.m., and 9 p.m., sponsored by Locomotive Solar. Sawmill demonstrations also take place in the Pioneer Village from 5-6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. until closing each day.
An antique tractor parade will take place daily at 6:30 p.m. in the Pioneer Village, followed by a wheat threshing demonstration at 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday of fair week.
The Commercial Building opens its doors Monday through Friday from 3-10 p.m. and on Saturday from 1 p.m. until closing. The Wheels of Agriculture game show takes place just north of the Commercial Building daily at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 8:30 p.m., sponsored by Abundant Life Church.
The Royal Bengal Tigers Show also will take place north of the Commercial Building, with performances Monday through Friday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Saturday shows at 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The tiger show is sponsored by Eastern Howard Performing Arts. Finally, a Butterfly Encounter takes place daily, courtesy of Engie Solar.
The fair actually began a month ago for many 4H Club members. Judging took place throughout June on dogs, cats, horses and ponies, and most of the project categories 4H offers. These competitions continued into last week, culminating with a horse and pony show, which begins at 9 a.m. today.
During fair week, these projects and animals will be on display for public viewing beginning at noon on Monday, July 10. And Thursday, July 13, marks the annual livestock auction, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Click here for the full schedule of 4H events.
The Midway is one of the cornerstones of the county fair. Thousands will visit the rides and games over the course of the week, beginning on Tue., July 11, at 3 p.m. Pay-One-Price wristbands are available online now for $25 until midnight on Sun., July 9. They may be purchased by clicking here. https://shop.authentigate.ca/store/NAME/918
Wristbands also may be purchased throughout the week for $30. The wristband vouchers may be redeemed one time only on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday. On Wednesday, July 12, each ride takes just one ticket to ride. Tickets are $1.50 each.
The Midway also offers an Express Pass for $15 per person. This additional wristband allows “front of the line” access to all rides through a separate entrance gate. Up to 25 percent of each ride is reserved for Express Pass holders, who are allowed to board rides first.
