The South 931 business corridor will get a new look later this year as Take 5 Car Wash and Oil Change comes to town. The business will demolish the Ruby Tuesday building at Southway Boulevard and Indiana 931 to make way for the new development
According to Kokomo Plan Commission director Greg Sheline, the site plan and other necessary documents were approved by the plan commission late last year. The only procedural hurdle remaining was an adjustment to the overlay zoning for the property. The Kokomo Common Council took care of that bit of housekeeping at its Jan. 10 meeting.
“It’s ready to go,” said Sheline. “The city council still has to approve the rezoning because they are in the 931 overlay, which needs to be rezoned. It’s a just a formality at this point.”
Based in Arlington, Texas, Take 5 Oil Change and Car Wash has 18 locations in Indiana and 673 locations in 25 states.
Kyle Flaming, civil engineer and representative for Take 5, stated that the existing building will be completely demolished, and the site will be redesigned to allow for more stormwater drainage. When questioned by Kokomo Common Council member Kara McKibben about the handling of waste oil, Flaming explained that all the oil will be kept out of view inside the facility and will be recycled.
The council passed the rezoning on first and second reading by unanimous vote.
