Kokomo observes Workers Memorial Day
More than 30 people gathered at the flagpole in front of Rodgers Pavilion in Highland Park Friday to remember Workers Memorial Day. The AFL-CIO set aside the day to remember workers who lost their lives in workplaces across the country.
The day also commemorates the signing of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970, signed into law by then President Richard Nixon.
The local celebration traces its beginnings back to 1987 and in 1988 with the installation of the flagpole and plaque to honor those lives lost on the job.
This year, Northwestern School band members Alexandria Shannonhouse and Logyn Rockwell played “Taps” as the attending group stood for a moment of silence. Kokomo Mayor Tyler Moore earlier read a proclamation of April 28, 2023, as Workers Memorial Day in the city of Kokomo.
Democrats to feed election workers
The Howard County Democratic Party is pleased to announce that it will provide lunch to all election workers at the polls for the May Primary Election. Regardless of party affiliation, the party wants to recognize community members who are overworked and underpaid, often criticized and disrespected, yet are critical to a free and fair elections process.
With the help of caterers Bruno’s Pizza and The Radish Market & Cafe, the party will provide lunches to all who have chosen to help Howard County’s democratic process. ZTHe Howard County Democratic Party wants to encourage everyone to not only vote on May 2 this year, but to say “thank you” to the valued election workers.
DCS to hold back-to-school event
Howard County Department of Child Services (DCS) will be holding a Back-to-School Community Event on July 17 from 4-7 p.m. In partnership with the Kokomo Jackrabbits, this event will be held at the Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
DCS is looking for other area businesses and organizations that would like to partner with it to donate school supplies and safety items for at least 250 children and possibly more with enough community support.
Whether these organizations want to hold a school supplies drive in May or June to benefit this event, be present at the event to pass things out, or make another type of donation, DCS would love to have them as a partner. These organizations can make a difference in a child’s future!
