Kokomo’s impassioned memorial service for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Like many youngsters raised in an African-American home before and during his generation, Rev. William J. Smith Jr. remembers two prominent pictures on display.
“You had Black Jesus, and you also had Martin Luther King,” recalled the Second Missionary Baptist Church pastor who was, “blessed to be the recipient of a pastoral leadership award from Morehouse College in his honor.”

On April 4, Smith spearheaded a poignant program of prayer, song, remarks, and remembrances that he curated at the MLK Monument on Apperson Way “to recognize his life and legacy and the race we still must run” on the 53rd anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination.
