KPD getting a new SWAT vehicle
City Council, Board of Works enable department to grab display model at a deep discount
The Kokomo Police Department is getting a new SWAT vehicle. The Kokomo Common Council authorized a transfer of funds at its June 13 meeting so that the department can purchase the vehicle, which will replace its 27-year-old SWAT van.
The Kokomo Board of Works and Public Safety approved the purchase of the vehicle on March 25, but the department did not have enough money available in the appropriate account. The Kokomo Common Council transferred $189,500 out of police wages to cover the cost of the vehicle.
The department’s current SWAT vehicle has 312,000 miles on it and is in need of repairs, according to a memo from Kokomo Police Chief Doug Stout. He disclosed that the vehicle also suffers from frame and body rust.
