A former Kokomo Police officer was arrested on July 22 in Tipton County on multiple sex offenses. Sinmi Asomuyide, 31, an officer with the department who was still in his probationary period, was terminated from KPD earlier this month due to the allegations.
On July 1, KPD Chief Doug Stout was contacted by another law enforcement agency, presumably the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department, in reference to the criminal allegations involving Asomuyide. In a press release, KPD disclosed that it contacted the Indiana State Police to investigate the allegations, and Stout ordered his department’s Professional Standards Unit to begin an internal investigation.
The release states that the internal investigation uncovered “multiple policy violations” by Asomuyide, which prompted his termination from employment. On July 22, KPD was informed of Asomuyide’s arrest by the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department.
Based on findings from the Indiana State Police investigation, Asomuyide was booked into custody for safe keeping and arrested on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor, sexual battery, child seduction, and official misconduct. He is being held on a $30,000 cash bond.
Asomuyide, originally from Nigeria, relocated to Kokomo after serving as a police officer with the Portsmouth, Va., Police Department for nearly three years, and as a correctional officer in Virginia for nearly four years before that. He was hired in July 2023 and completed training at the Indiana State Police Academy last fall. He attended Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
This case remains active for investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Kokomo Police Department at (765) 456-7017. Any information received will be forwarded to the investigating agency.
