Ellen Clark, Kokomo Howard County Library’s Children’s Outreach Director decided that something fun was in order for the first week in September since it was Fashion Week in New York. What she came up with was Runway Funday, an event for kids to be able to “walk the runway” and learn about making accessories and creatively dressing up to show how new trends can be made by the addition of a hat, scarf, or glasses.
“This is the first time we have done this,” said Clark “We wanted to try it … and we have a great turnout.”
Clark set up a table for kids to make some of their own accessories and then library staff put together a runway with a red carpet. About 20 kids worked diligently on making personalized jewelry and other accessories before reaching into a big tote full of wigs, hats, feather boas, and glasses and taking their places on the runway.
“We knew some of the kids didn’t have costumes to wear so we brought out hats and other things for them to wear,” said Clark.
As lively music played the kids, shy at first, started to get into the act, practicing their best “runway walk” to the delight of their families and library staff who watched.
