Gunlite retires from KPD
On Jan. 2, Kokomo Police Officer Beth Gunlite retired from the department after more than 26 years of distinguished service. Gunlite served in the patrol division and was a Field Training Officer, a School Resource Officer, and the American Legion District 5 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2007. She also received two life-saving medals during her career.
Wyman celebrated for his career
More than 100 people showed up at Pastariffic on Jan. 3 for a surprise celebration of former Howard County Commissioner and County Councilman Paul Wyman’s political career. People from both sides of the political aisle joined friends and family in wishing the community leader well in his future endeavors.
Mayor’s Prayer and Action Breakfast set for Jan. 9
Kokomo Mayor Tyler Moore and the Howard County Ministerial Association will host the 2023 Mayor’s Prayer and Action Breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, at Cross America, 840 Daniel Drive. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 8 a.m.
This annual, interdenominational service will join civic and religious leaders, who will offer prayers of intercession for elected officials, police, firefighters, educators, leaders of the labor, business and medical communities, and spiritual leaders.
The mayor will also present the annual Faith and Community in Action Award. The award honors spiritually based individuals or groups who contribute to making a positive difference in our community through their time and talent.
Spartz to visit Greentown

A representative from US Representative Victoria Spartz’s office is scheduled to visit Greentown on Wed., Jan. 25. The Congresswoman will meet with constituents from 10 a.m. until noon in the Greentown Town Hall Meeting Room, 112 N. Meridian St.
Ivy Tech to offer ServSafe Food Manager Class in Kokomo
Ivy Tech Community College is offering a one-day instructor-led training course to prepare students to take the ServSafe Food Manager Certification exam.
The class will be offered Wed., Jan. 18, at Ivy Tech’s Kokomo campus at 1815 E. Morgan St.
Indiana Code 410-IAC7-22 requires mandatory certification of at least one person who oversees the food safety operation within each food establishment. The ServSafe program is developed by the National Restaurant Association with the help of foodservice industry experts. Years of experience and inside knowledge of the foodservice industry are at the core of the ServSafe courses, exams and materials that prepare students to handle food sanitation risks.
ServSafe certification is valid for five years. The course fee is $155 and includes the manual, all study materials and the certification exam. The class will start with check-in between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and will run until 3:30 p.m. The exam will start at the conclusion of the class and last about two hours.
The fee to take the exam without attending the class is $60. The book can be purchased separately for $65.
