Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s Nu Mu Nu Chapter in Kokomo is truly living up to the fraternity motto, “Friendship is Essential to the Soul,” having donated $2,000 to the Kokomo Rescue Mission on Aug. Nu Mu Nu charter member Dr. Lance Washington explained that for Omega Psi Phi, “Service, education and giving back to the community is paramount, it’s not just a college experience.”
Nu Mu Nu’s Social Action Chair Willie Stroman concurred, stating that since Kokomo’s Nu Mu Nu Chapter started in November 2016, the fraternity has been involved in community service such as blood drives, community health assessments, and put on their yearly Pink and Purple Ball which is, according to Stroman, “one of our biggest fundraisers.”
The Kokomo Rescue Mission’s plight is more than just homelessness according to Washington, “It’s important that we raise the bar … we wanted to raise their profile and raise ours, too.”
Recently, the Kokomo Rescue Mission had been advertising for meat donations as the Mission did not receive the usual donation of the grand champion hog from the 2023 Howard County 4H Fair. As a result, the $2,000 donation from Nu Mu Nu Chapter came at a critical time. Kokomo Rescue Mission Executive Director Kevin Smith expressed his appreciation and praise for the local fraternity.
“I think it’s just wonderful to bring in their (Nu Mu Nu Chapter’s) heart and expertise into what we do, and also to connect them with the people they help,” said Smith. “I think it is a win-win.”
“All of us are professionals,” continued Washington, “IT, dentist, physician … but also for what we represent in this town. We want to highlight that we have a professional African American organization that is doing something very positive. We are not political. It’s not blue, it’s not red, it’s helping everybody. We have been around for seven years in this town, and we are growing.”

Senior Night for state champion Marching Wildkats
Last week’s season opener for the Kokomo High School football team was a successful one, as they downed Leo, 16-14. But it was the halftime show that caught many people’s attention.
The state champion Marching Wildkats took the field to reprise their award-winning performance, featuring the seniors who helped lead the band to its second straight state title.
