The girls on the Eastern High School basketball team likely felt like they got hit by a truck on Dec. 14. They traveled to Northwestern High School that night for a game, but got dismantled on the court, 61-27.
The Lady Tigers struck quickly and decisively, opening the game with a 20-0 run that encompassed the first quarter. Though the Lady Comets showed a little life in the second, reducing the gap slightly to 27-10 at the half, the outcome of the game was never in doubt.
Three Northwestern shooters found double digits on the scoreboard. Anna Bishir scored 15 points to lead her team, followed by Halie Koetter with 12 points, and Lexi Hale with 13 points. Eastern got 15 points and four steals from senior Jenna Odle. Freshman Mackenzie Appleton secured six rebounds for the Lady Comets.
Eastern stumbled away from the contest and suffered another loss at the hands of Sheridan on Dec. 15. At 3-10, they next face the 1-12 Marion Giants on Dec. 28.
Northwestern had little time to savor its win. The Lady Tigers reeled from losses to Carroll on Dec. 18 and a heartbreaker against Kokomo High School, 32-31, on Dec. 21. They will take their 3-11 record to a holiday tournament against Argos High School on Dec. 30.
