The Family Service Association is a non-profit organization that promotes healthy families and empowers vulnerable individuals and families through education, prevention, and crisis intervention programs.
Domestic violence shelter in need of donations
Howard County’s domestic violence shelter is in need of several donated items. As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Family Service Association of Howard County asks the community for its assistance in meeting the shelter’s needs. To make a donation from the list, drop off items at the Family Service Association office, 618 S. Main St., Kokomo, or at any Solidarity Community Federal Credit Union location.
Solidarity goes purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Solidarity Community Federal Credit Union has been a strong supporter of the Family Service Association and Domestic Violence Shelter since its inception in Howard County. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 42.5 percent of Indiana women and 27.9 percent of Indiana men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and Solidarity will be collecting items for the Domestic Violence Shelter.
“Solidarity has been a loyal partner to the Family Service Association’s Domestic Violence Shelter for many years. We are thankful for their continued support with sponsorships, donations, and advocacy,” said Tracy Martino, director of the Family Service Association of Howard County.
Drop off donations of ethnic hair products, dish towels, washcloths, towels, pillows, hairbrushes, twin sheet sets, pillowcases, white t-shirts of any size, sweatpants of any size, and twin mattress covers at either Solidarity location in Kokomo.
According to NCADV, up to 99 percent of domestic violence victims experience economic abuse during an abusive relationship, and finances are often cited as the biggest barrier to leaving an abusive relationship. Amy Benner, President, and CEO of Solidarity said, “We know economic or financial abuse plays a major role in the safety of people in abusive situations, and we want our members, employees, and the communities we serve to know that we are committed locally to the fight against domestic violence.”
Solidarity is encouraging other businesses and organizations to join and support the Domestic Violence Shelter at the Angel Walk on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Indiana University Kokomo.
