Howard County Relay for Life was held Saturday, July 29, and despite the heat fielded 40 teams of walkers and raised more than $22,000 during the six-hour event.
Event representative Gary Hight stated that the event “went pretty well,” despite the fact that some vendors to the event cancelled due to the extreme heat.
The event walkers continued their laps around Kokomo High School’s Walter Cross Field until 10 p.m., when the lights were dimmed and luminaries were lit honoring those that had lost their battle with cancer. The event came to a close as the walkers continued one more lap.

Library holds 48-Hour Film Contest
The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, in partnership with Sun King Kokomo, is bringing back the annual 48-Hour Film Contest. The contest challenges teams to create short films in just 48 hours. Every aspect of the film must be done within this timeframe, including writing, filming, and editing.
The contest’s kickoff meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Sun King Kokomo, 500 N. Buckeye St. During the kickoff meeting, teams will be given elements they must include in their film, including a random genre and a specific line.
Last year’s required line was “We’ve been trying to reach you.”
There is no limit to the number of people who may be on a team, though at least one representative must be present at the kickoff meeting to register and receive instructions.
After the kickoff meeting, teams will have until Sunday evening, Aug. 27, to submit their film. Teams that follow all requirements and submit their film on time will be eligible to win awards the following weekend at the screening.
This year’s screening will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, in the Sun King Depot Room. All ages are invited to attend.
