Patterson sets Taylor rushing record
The Taylor Titans broke a four-game losing streak last Friday night, Sept. 16. Their 40-6 win over Clinton Central came in historic fashion with a record-breaking performance by their senior leader Jay Patterson.
Patterson became the all-time, single-game rushing leader at Taylor High School, rushing for 291 yards on 27 attempts while scoring 3 touchdowns. This explosive ground performance exceeds the previous long standing school record of 266 yards set in the 1970s.
During the school day on Friday, Patterson just knew there was going to be something special about that night.
"The whole day at school I was telling people, 'Tonight is the record breaking game,'" said Patterson. "Once I got that first run, a 50-yard run on the first play, that’s when I knew it was going to be up from there. My dad was in my ear to keep pushing me, and my line was on point! I owe it all to them really."
One motivator for Patterson was thoughts of his friend and fellow senior classmate, John McKoon. McKoon passed away a year ago and was a member of the Titans football team. His grandfather, Jeffrey "Funk" Smith, was also on his mind. Smith is an instrumental figure in Patterson's life.
"I wanted to make them proud," said Patterson.
Patterson has rushed for more than 800 yards already this season and has eight rushing touchdowns. Teams have learned not to kick the ball off to him as he is a dangerous return man. He has one kickoff return touchdown this season.
The Taylor Titans face off against Sheridan this Friday night, hoping to build on last week’s game. Patterson said he is up for the challenge of leading the charge.

KFD shows off new engine to trustee
The Kokomo Fire Department made a trip to Wellbrooke of Kokomo on Sept. 15 to show off its new Fire Engine No. 3. The location was important because it is where Center Township Trustee Rev. Robert Lee currently is recovering from health complications.
Lee agreed to have Center Township purchase the engine for the department as part of the township’s duty to provide fire protection services. The trustee was in good spirits as the firefighters showed him the various features on the vehicle and expressed their appreciation.
Also impressed by the new fire engine was Lana, Wellbrooke’s canine mascot. The pooch is particularly enamored by emergency vehicles, and she was more than happy to get an up-close look.
