The City of Kokomo held its first Safety Palooza event in Foster Park on Oct. 28, inviting hundreds of families to enjoy a crisp fall day in Halloween costumes while they learn about safety.
Organized by the Kokomo Fire Department, Safety Palooza offered free bicycle helmets for children and free smoke detectors. There also was a meal of hot dogs and potato chips and plenty of candy and treats.
Kids could get their faces painted or escape from the fire department's smoke house fire simulator. They also had the opportunity to climb into a fire truck or even a Lifeline helicopter.
The bravest of kids participated in a Junior Firefighter Challenge where they learned how difficult it is to carry the equipment and hoses at a fire scene.
The 2023 Safety Palooza was sponsored by Peyton Manning Children's Hospital, Indiana Heartland Federal Credit Union, and Martin Wrecker Service.

Frozen Sandlot returns for 6th season
Bridges Outreach and the City of Kokomo are bringing The Frozen Sandlot back for a sixth year. The ice-skating rink has become a staple in the community. Admission prices will remain the same for the 2023 season.
The rink will open the Friday after Thanksgiving on Nov. 24 There will be 35 days open to the public during the seven-week skating season.
The website and Facebook page have the schedule for the season. There are several dates available for groups to rent the rink or a heated suite. In the past, the Frozen Sandlot has hosted schools, family Christmas parties, business groups and lots of birthday parties. Season passes and gift packages for a date night or Christmas gift are available.
“We love hosting people from all over Indiana and beyond,” Travis Taflinger CEO of Bridges Outreach said. “Families have the opportunity to spend time together, get outside, and have some fun.”
According to Taflinger, keeping prices low is a priority.
“It is important to the City of Kokomo and Bridges Outreach to keep prices affordable,” Taflinger said. “We are not increasing our prices this year, and it's still only $7 a ticket. This gives you access for the whole day and includes skates. Skaters can even leave and come back without any issues. If a skater brings their own skates their rate is only $5.”
