Howard County Sheriff Jerry Asher was in an upbeat mood on Dec. 18. He presented two new recruits at the Board of Commissioners meeting to be sworn in as deputies, filling vacancies that had persisted for months.
The commissioners welcomed Jordan Hicks and Jeremiah Jackson to the sheriff’s department as each new officer recited their oath of office, administered by Howard County Clerk Deb Stewart. Asher introduced Hicks first.
“We had the retirement of a 30-year officer back in September,” said Asher. “Jordan Hicks has worked in the jail for us for a few years, and he's been doing civil process for us for quite a while now, too. He went down this morning and took his physical tests and had to run in a mile and a half in that nice weather we had this morning, so you gotta love him for doing that.”
The second recruit, Jackson, is notable as he left the Kokomo Police Department to become a deputy.
“I had another deputy who left for a private company and more money,” said Asher. “I don't know why that was, but oh, my goodness. I think this is the best place in the world to work. Jeremiah Jackson is another deputy we want to get sworn in today. He worked for us for quite a while in the jail and on transports.
“He's somewhat of a lateral. He went to the Kokomo Police Department and went to the police academy, so he already has his training done. He's come back to the sheriff's office to be a deputy for us.”
