Silver Birch of Kokomo celebrated its 5th birthday with a party in their South Washington Street lobby. Silver Birch Kokomo Community Executive Director Tony Stewart welcomed community members and residents to the assisted living facility and introduced local government leaders and Silver Birch staff to the party attendees.
Silver Birch co-founder Mark Laubacher expressed his pride in the Kokomo and his appreciation for Stewart and his staff, “One of our core values is ‘respected.’ Everybody is a somebody. That’s what we have here (Kokomo Silver Birch), and what Tony and his team are doing here is building a community that we can watch out for each other.”
Stewart introduced State Representative Mike Karickhoff, who co-sponsored Indiana House Bill 1461 that addressed affordable long-term services in Indiana such as the Silver Birch Kokomo facility. “This is a great place, with a great leader in Tony. I’m really excited to have been a part of getting the reimbursement rates introduced,” said Karickhoff. “We need more facilities like this across the State.”
Mayor Tyler Moore also spoke highly about the facility, “There has always been a negative stigma attached to the term ‘affordable housing’, but this facility gives dignity to the term ‘affordable housing,’” said Moore. “This place is a gem in downtown Kokomo.”

Kiwanis awards students for grade improvement
In May, the Kiwanis Club of Kokomo Foundation presented its 51st annual Darrell Hodson Awards to local students. The 4th to 8th grade students, who were nominated by their teachers, showed the most improvement in bringing up their grades.
Darrell Hodson, a local attorney, was instrumental in establishing the Foundation for the Kiwanis Club of Kokomo.
