Spring planting livens downtown

The spring season arrived in downtown Kokomo over the weekend as dozens of volunteers broke out their green thumbs for a bit of planting. From the City Hall to Foster Park, flowers and greenery were installed in beds across the city’s core.
The annual planting is a tradition that reaches back a decade, employing volunteers from businesses, nonprofits, and civic organizations to beautify downtown as part of the Kokomo Beautiful Initiative from the Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance.
Already, the flower baskets that adorn lampposts along the city’s downtown streets and major thoroughfares have been prepared, and the many planting beds were filled on May 10. An additional planting day will be held on Wed., May 14, to fill the larger containers and the alley gardens. Volunteers will meet on the Courthouse Square from 1-4 p.m. to resume planting.
A final step, the hanging of more than 1,000 flower baskets, will be conducted later by employees of the City of Kokomo.
