Love was in the air last week as Silver Birch of Kokomo held its third annual Sweetheart Dance for the residents at the assisted living facility. The dining hall was filled with festive decorations and even more festive celebrants, decked out in their Valentine’s Day attire.
The annual event is just one of several organized by Silver Birch’s life enrichment staff, but the Sweetheart Dance is special. It also coincides with the election of the facility’s Sweetheart King and Queen as well as the Resident Council president and vice president posts.
This year, Tom and Patti Boyd were bestowed the honor of Sweetheart King and Queen. The two celebrated by donning their crowns and sneaking a Valentine’s Day smooch. But the Boyds won’t simply hold the titles and set their crowns on the mantel.
“They will represent us at various events this year,” said Nannette McVeigh, Life Enrichment Coordinator for Silver Birch of Kokomo. “We will have our Silver Birch of Kokomo Taste of the Town event on Fri., April 5. We’re inviting local restaurants and vendors to come to our community, and our king and queen will visit with them and take pictures.”
The results of the Resident Council election also were announced at the dance, with TC Curry winning a second term as president and Thurman Shelton taking the vice-president’s seat.
“Thurman actually just gave a speech about how excited he was,” McVeigh commented. “He's ready to get started, and he's very adamant about that. I would say this is very special event for him and all of our residents.”
Aside from the elections, there were plenty of activities in store for the residents at the Sweetheart Dance. A hearty dinner was served, and those with a sweet tooth could stop by the “kissing booth” for a Hershey’s Kiss.
Of course, a Sweetheart Dance has to have music, so Robert Farmer pulled out his guitar to sing some familiar love songs and golden oldies for the crowd. He even took a few requests.
The festive atmosphere was contagious, drawing residents out for the evening. It is exactly the kind of event that makes McVeigh’s job so fulfilling, she explained.
“I really was so excited for this event,” said McVeigh. “I'm very proud to be a part of Silver Birch. I enjoy getting to know these residents, and being here for them, and building these relationships with them.”
