It looked like the Titans could hold on. Up four with a minute to play, Taylor High School’s varsity boys basketball team did its best to hold off a late charge by the Northwestern Tigers. But it was not enough, as the Tigers scored six unanswered points to take the win on Dec. 8.
Northwestern’s Preston Sims started the comeback with an easy two, then tried to tie the game on the Tigers’ next possession. His shot fell short, but Hayden Cook was there for the put-back with 16 seconds remaining.
Fouled on the shot, Cook sank the bonus to give Northwestern the lead. He would add another point on a free throw following a desperation foul by Taylor to seal the final score, 44-42.
Neither team seemed willing to give up on the contest, as the lead changed hands repeatedly throughout the game. While Northwestern held the early advantage, leading at the close of the first and second quarters, Taylor stormed back to take the lead after three quarters, 32-28.
Sims led the Tigers with 18 points, and Cook added 14 points and six rebounds. For Taylor, sophomore Dre McClatchey led with 16 points on 7-12 shooting. Sophomore Javionne Harris dominated the Titans’ defensive effort with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.
The victory started Northwestern, now 6-2, on a four-win streak, which it will place on the line at Hamilton Heights on Jan. 5. Taylor shook off the loss to take a pair of games from Delphi and improve to 6-2 on the season. It will next see action on Jan. 5 when Rossville comes to visit.
