Kokomo football legend Marcus Adams is giving back to his community through health and fitness. The one-time Kokomo Wildkat MVP and Total Wildkat award winner is still in the KHS record books for his accomplishments on the field. Having rushed for more than 3,000 yards in his high school career, including a game where he ran for a staggering 266 yards, Adams left quite a legacy.
Adams’ appetite for the game did not end when his high school playing days were finished. He went on to several small colleges to pursue his dream of playing next-level football and eventually landed at Lane College, a Historically Black College in Tennessee. After capping off a great career with Lane, Adams’ collegiate playing days were done.
After college, Adams moved back to his hometown of St. Louis, and there he found a love and passion for personal training. After five years, he decided to come back to Kokomo and continue his training business where he had a wealth of relationships.
At the start of his training here in Kokomo, Adams found several locations that he utilized to engage with people. Whether it was Jackson Morrow Park, the YMCA, the Carver Community Center, or even his spot at The Lions Den, Adams’ skill for connecting with people is truly what sets him apart.
Flexin Fitness is the name of Adams business, an endeavor he has been perfecting all his life. It is something that he knew was a way he could enrich the lives of others.
“It’s a blessing to be able to help people reach their goals and show them that they can do it,” said Adams. “It’s about being consistent and having that accountability. I have a big passion for this. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I’m thinking about after God are my clients; making sure they are on top of their game so that we can reach our goals.”
Adams made his journey to Kokomo as a young child when he was only in the 4th grade. When he arrived, he first attended Boulevard Elementary, Maple Crest, and then Bon Air. While coming up through his formative years, he terrorized people on the football field with his skills as a running back.
During Adams’ P.A.L. football days, he excited the fans and awed his opponents with dazzling rushing performances as running back for the Packers.
One thing that is certain with Adams is that his work ethic, ability to perform and be successful was always evident. He was paving the way to be a successful entrepreneur, and now he is passing on the knowledge he has attained to others through health and fitness.
Lane College is where Adams earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Thinking that he may be a physical education teacher one day, he relentlessly pursued his education so that he could educate and pass information along to others. Doing all his work and training in education, as well as in his personal life, he was inspired to be a personal trainer to help other people stay in shape and reach their own health achievements.
From a business aspect, Adams explained that he didn’t really have anyone close to teach him the business side.
“I guess it was just a calling for me,” said Adams. “I would work a few other jobs, but I would always end up finding myself helping other people with their fitness goals. Now, I have a few friends that help me out in the business department, but in the beginning, it was just trial and error. There came a time when things just fell into place for me.”
Adams expressed that the reason he felt he was such a tremendous success in football was he had people around him that counted on him.
“With people counting on me, I didn’t ever want to let them down,” said Adams. “It’s the same way for the people who are counting on me for their physical fitness. I don’t want to let anybody down, especially if they are coming to me. There are a lot of other places that people could go to receive help.”
One thing that Adams really wants people to get a good handle on is the idea that they should include fitness into their everyday lifestyle.
“A lot of times we put it on the back burner, and it’s important because one day we could wake up fine, but the next day it could be something different,” said Adams. “Either you’re going to decide that you’re going to begin your fitness journey, or you’ll wait until your doctor has to tell you that you must. Why wait?”
