Does your 501.c3 organization engage in food assistance or mass feeding? United Way of Howard County has a grant opportunity to help. United Way has been awarded federal funds from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/ Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program (EFSP).
United Way of Howard County has been chosen to administer $34,752 in EFSP funding to supplement existing programs in Howard County. Applications are available by request. Email cgraham@unitedwayhoco.org, or pick up an application at the United Way office, 210 W. Walnut St. Applications and are due by Feb. 27 at noon.
The funding amounts are based on local employment levels and determined by a national board, chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consisting of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, the Jewish Federations of Northern America, The Salvation Army, and United Way worldwide. The local board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
A local EFSP board, made up of representatives from the organizations mentioned above, will determine how the funds are distributed and made available to Howard County food and shelter programs. The local EFSP board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.
Under the terms of the grant from the national board, to receive funds agencies must:
1) Be private, voluntary non-profits or units of government;
2) Be eligible to receive federal funds;
3) Have an accounting system;
4) Practice non-discrimination;
5) Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and or shelter programs;
6) Private volunteer organizations must have a voluntary board.
Applicants must have a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) and a UEI number. Applicants without these identifiers are encouraged to begin acquiring the numbers prior to notice of award receipt.
United Way of Howard County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds to The Kokomo Rescue Mission, The Salvation Army, Gilead House, and Family Services Association of Howard County. The agencies provide meals and to residents of Howard County.
