United Way Serving Howard and Tipton Counties recently listed the building space occupied at 210 W. Walnut St. for sale.
The 19,404 square-foot facility’s original intended purpose was to house other non-profit agencies in Howard County. The space is currently home to United Way and the Very Early Childhood Education Center, leaving much of the building empty and underutilized.
“The United Way Board of Directors feels it’s in the best interest of the organization and its donors to transition to a facility that better fits the needs of the organization,” said Kaleb Hollingsworth, United Way Board Chair. “The current building has been a wonderful home for United Way for decades, and we are sure it will be a great fit for the next person who decides to call 210 W. Walnut St. home.”

KUO holding masquerade gala
"I am respectful. I am responsible. I am reliable. I am ready."
These are the four "Rs" of Kokomo Urban Outreach's UP creed, taught to kids as part of the UP Program. This unique mentoring program is open to all children ages 3-18 in the greater Kokomo area.
The UP Program teaches kids how to work in order to make money. They are also taught soft skills so that one day they will become great employees and self-reliant adults.
Kokomo Urban Outreach's goal is to continue making this program available to all kids. The organization is holding a fundraising dinner on Sept. 21 to expand the program. The Black and White Masquerade Gala will also feature comedian John Branyan and his son, Luke, and a silent auction as part of the evening's events.
Kokomo Urban Outreach is seeking donations for the silent auction. The donors will be recognized at the auction table as well as in the event program. They ask that people and businesses consider donating so that more kids can learn to live out the UP creed and learn necessary life skills.
Visit www.kokomourbanoutreach.org for more details about the UP Program. Donations can be sent to Kokomo Urban Outreach, ATTN: Silent Auction, 1701 S. Locke St., Kokomo, IN 46902.

Kokomo School Board appoints principals
The Kokomo School Board of School Trustees approved the recommendations by Superintendent Dr. Michael Sargent regarding administrative positions at Bon Air schools, including the one-year appointment of Jonathan Riegler as the interim Principal for both Bon Air Middle and Bon Air Elementary schools for the 2023-2024 school year; and the appointment of LaShaya Williams as the Assistant Principal at its regular monthly meeting on August 7th.
Mr. Riegler’s predecessor, Dr. Amanda Landrum, was appointed as the new Principal of Central Middle International School (CMIS), effective July 25th, 2023. In light of Dr. Landrum's appointment as Principal of CMIS, Kokomo School Corporation is pleased to announce the Board’s approval of the recommendations.
Dr. Sargent believes Jonathan’s leadership experiences will make a difference as he steps into this new role.
“Jonathan brings exceptional leadership abilities, dedication, and commitment to fostering an optimal learning environment for all students,” Dr. Sargent noted. “Having served as the Principal of Bon Air Elementary since 2020, and as the Assistant Principal of Elwood Haynes prior to that, Jonathan steps into this expanded role to provide a valuable opportunity for innovative collaboration and growth across grade levels.”
The decision to appoint Jonathan Riegler as the Interim Principal for both schools aims to ensure continuity.
Director of Secondary Education and Special Programs Dr. Tenicia Helmberger noted, "Mr. Riegler is dedicated to developing an understanding of school staff, students, and families in an effort to best support their interests, and advocate for their needs. His experience at Bon Air Elementary and dedication to the Bon Air community will provide a smooth transition during this period. Kokomo Schools is proud to have a team of remarkable educators who are committed to providing quality educational experiences for all Kokomo students.”
Jonathan noted that he is eager to continue learning and growing as a leader within Kokomo Schools, while also continuing to build on Bon Air’s growth and momentum. Jonathan is excited to welcome Assistant Principal LaShaya Williams to the Bon Air campus.
“I am delighted to welcome LaShaya Williams as the new Assistant Principal at Bon Air Middle School,” Mr. Riegler expressed, “Mrs. Williams is a highly experienced educator and leader, with nearly 20 years of classroom and administrative expertise within the Kokomo Schools district. Known for her exceptional ability to develop strong connections with students, staff, and families, Mrs. Williams consistently prioritizes the well-being and success of all students. Bon Air is truly fortunate to have her join our team, and I am confident that her dedication and compassion will contribute greatly to our school community.”
LaShaya is Kokomo High School graduate and a Wildkat at heart, and she started her teaching career as an elementary educator in Kokomo Schools. LaShaya has gained professional experiences which include Professional Development Facilitator, Title 1 Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Learning Facilitator, and as an Indiana University Kokomo Adjunct Professor.
"As I step into the role of Vice Principal, I am honored to have the opportunity to continue serving Kokomo Schools in this capacity,” LaShaya remarked. “Having had the privilege of serving in various roles within this wonderful community, I am excited to bring my experience and passion for education to this position. Together with Principal Riegler and the dedicated staff and supportive community of Bon Air, I am confident that we will continue to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students. I look forward to working collaboratively to further enhance Bon Air’s mission of empowering students for success."
Dr. Helmberger regards LaShaya’s extensive experience and dedication to social-emotional learning as assets to the school community.
“LaShaya has consistently demonstrated her dedication to cultivating a positive and inclusive educational environment,” Dr. Helmberger explained. “Previously as a Learning Facilitator and with her prior roles within the Kokomo Schools district, LaShaya’s expertise and leadership will undoubtedly be invaluable in our continued commitment to empowering and supporting students. It is a testament to her dedication that she serves as an educator for Kokomo Schools where she once walked the halls as a student.”
