Walk in the garden with First Christian
Also, Dr. Victoria Moyer joins Community Howard Regional Health
Kokomo’s First Christian Church is looking for partners to walk in its gardens and help them grow. The church has been working on three projects since last year: a place to plant vegetables; a walking path with a playground; and a quiet place for meditation and memorial.
All three are located adjacent to each other on the church’s property on the corner of Malfalfa and Sycamore. For 2023 they are expanding those projects, and looking for partners to help, according to Senior Pastor Reverend Dr. Al Adams.
Food for the body, activity for health, and contemplation for the spirit -- these are the portions of First Christian Church’s community garden, or “gardens plural,” as Adams emphasized. Adams, who came to Kokomo’s First Christian in early 2022, is not new to building projects, having worked extensively with Habitat for Humanity in Colorado and here. Kokomo’s Habitat for Humanity office is also located in the church building.
“The community play garden, you think of it as a playground, but we will include music, and we will be adding outdoor musical instruments,” said Adams, walking along the newly laid mulch in the playground area.
Around the area will be a walking path, with a possible labyrinth in the middle, and fruit trees populating the path. These are all being planned by Adams and a team of church members who are working on ideas for the area.
“I am a big believer in teams” she noted.
The community food garden started with three raised beds, and in 2022 several varieties of peppers and tomatoes were planted along with winter squash. Last year’s crop went to Friendship Haven and First Christian Church’s food pantry.
“The community spiritual garden is just a peaceful place to be,” remarked Adams.
She noted her team also had an interest in making the spiritual garden accessible to everyone.
“The idea is to create a u-shaped accessible, peaceful place to be with a memorial spot,” she said.
The church is still looking for partners, both financially and physically, to make the total vision they have for the property come to fruition. The church had a kickoff lunch in May 2022, serving vegetables that were grown in the food garden. Adams gave a presentation to Kiwanis last year along with applying for grants with The Disciples of Christ denomination.
The church wants to emphasize that these projects are for the community as a whole, and not just for their membership.
“Those three are there to nurture spirits, mind and body,” said Adams. “It’s for our community. It’s not an us and you all stay away kind of thing.”
