Wedding venue regulations left at the altar
City abandons changes to zoning ordinance concerning vacation properties as well
Wedding venues and AirBnB rentals will not be re-classified to require special exceptions in zoning as originally proposed by the Kokomo Plan Commission. Commission director Greg Sheline asked the Kokomo Common Council to remove that language from an ordinance on July 25.
Last week, the plan commission voted to regulate the development of wedding venues and vacation rental homes. According to Councilman Matt Grecu, who represents the council on the plan commission, those proposals need more consideration.
“After some discussion between the administration and the plan commission, it was decided that we need to pull the wedding venue exception and the vacation rental home special exception and definition for the time being,” said Grecu.
Sheline explained that the city’s zoning ordinance already has language that should address the issue. He does believe some regulation will be required for the downtown district, however.
“Basically, we were going to put it as a special exception, but after the plan commission looked at it, I looked at it again,” said Sheline. “In the C2 commercial zone, a banquet hall is already a permitted use. You can have a wedding venue in a banquet hall.
