What will The Kokomo Lantern cover?
The short, easy answer is anything that matters to Kokomo and Howard County, but not everything. We’re small. We don’t have dozens of reporters to cover every event, public meeting, or sport. But we’ll try to bring you the best coverage you can find anywhere.
Our first focus is local government. For the past few years, Kokomo and Howard County government has received limited coverage in local media. Some of it has been good, but some things have gone unreported. The best way to keep your local leaders accountable is to let the people know what they are doing. More than that, the people need to know why things happen and what it might mean to them. That is the goal of The Kokomo Lantern.
Our second focus is community. We love Kokomo and Howard County. We love our schools, our non-profits, our businesses, our churches, our labor unions, our people. We want to share that love by providing coverage of them. If there is someone out there making a difference in people’s lives, we want to tell their story. If your children are succeeding academically, through their arts, or on the sports field, we want to recognize them. If your business hit a milestone or is giving back to the community, we want people to know it.
Our third focus is solving problems. This is a tough one. A news publication can’t fix everything. But we can try to advocate for solutions. Our staff has experience tackling some of the larger issues in the community, such as drug abuse, homelessness, and mental illness. Those problems haven’t gone away, but The Kokomo Lantern wants to be an advocate for change. We will work with and call upon members of this community to join in the effort to address the many issues we all face.
Our final focus is politics. It’s often ugly. It’s polarizing. And if it isn’t something you like hearing, then it’s biased, right? Let’s make things clear up front: The Kokomo Lantern isn’t a Democrat publication. It isn’t a Republican publication. It is an equal opportunity offender. You are going to read things you like and don’t like in our political coverage. We’re not here to confirm your biases. But we promise to keep our political coverage away from all other coverage we provide.
