TODAY
Asteroids at the Observatory
What is the risk of the earth being hit by an asteroid? Learn more about it at Indiana University Kokomo’s free Observatory open house this Sunday, March 9. Patrick Motl, dean of the School of Sciences and professor of physics, will begin the open house at 8 p.m. with a discussion of recent work and the current understanding of risks from the asteroid 2024 YR_4. After the presentation, stargazers may be able to see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and the moon, as well as highlights from the winter hexagon through the Observatory’s telescopes. Observation will continue through 10 p.m., weather permitting. The Observatory is at 2660 S. Washington St. Free parking is available on campus.

Community Food Drive
The Center Township Trustee’s Office is holding its second annual Community Food Drive, March 1-31. The drive will benefit the office’s Hand Up Food Pantry. The office is accepting donations of dry cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables, beans, and fruit, crackers, juice, and granola/cereal bars. Donations may be dropped off at the township office, 213 E. Jefferson St., from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. until noon on Fridays. Hand Up Pantry
The Center Township Trustee’s Office has opened its Hand Up Food Pantry at the township office, 213 E. Jefferson St. The pantry is open every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. The goal is to serve those experiencing food insecurity. Participants must make an appointment by calling 765-452-8259. A photo ID or proof of address is required.
New Baby Bunch
Do you have a new bundle of joy? Or do you feel like you’re in the trenches of parenting? Join the New Baby Bunch for friendship, support, and to share your parenting journey with other caregivers. The group meets each Monday from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Kokomo Howard County Public Library’s south branch, 1755 E. Center Road. The next meeting is Mon., March 10. Caregivers with a baby ages birth to 12 months are welcome to participate. Older siblings are welcome to join also.
Mario Story Time
It’s National Mario Day! Kids will listen to a story about Mario the race car driver and enjoy fun, hands-on activities at the Kokomo Howard County Library’s Russiaville Branch, 315 Mesa Dr., on Mon., March 10, from 10-11 a.m. This event is for children ages 3-5.
Sew Much

New class alert! The Kokomo Family YMCA, 114 N. Union St., presents Core and Glutes Burn on Mondays at 5:35 p.m. in the TRX area. Your core and glutes are essential for supporting your body, so give them the attention they deserve. In this 30-minute class, you will focus on exercises that target your core and strengthen your posterior chain using unilateral movements. Spring into Tech Adult Technology Classes
Spring into tech by learning from Kokomo experts on the basics of computers, smart phones, scam prevention, and cyber security. Thanks to Community First Bank and Elsewhen Technology, the Kokomo Howard County Public Library’s Digital Den, 201 N. Union St., will hold this adult technology class on Wednesdays in March at 3 p.m. On March 12, Digital Ben returns to teach smart phone basics. On March 19, the Digital Den hosts Justin Van Zuiden, Fraud Manager at Community First Bank of Indiana, as he talks about scam prevention. High School Exhibition
Come show support for the talent and creativity of area high school juniors and seniors in the 27th Annual High School Exhibition, taking place at the IU Kokomo Art Gallery, 2300 S. Washington St. Seven schools from the surrounding area will be participating this year. The artworks on display will include a variety of different media ranging from: drawing, painting, ceramics, mixed media and much more. The exhibition will be displayed through April 2. The reception for this exhibition takes place Wed., March 12 from 4-6 p.m., and the presentation of awards will begin at 5 p.m., tentatively. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and is always free and open to the public.
Healthy Reader Fair

The Kokomo Family YMCA, 114 N. Union St., offers Kickboxing with Joanna each Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. in the Y’s Functional Fitness Room. The class combines cardio, boxing, and martial arts to create a dynamic program. Punch and kick your way to a healthier you. This class is open to YMCA members. Empty Bowl for KUO
The annual Empty Bowl fundraiser for Kokomo Urban Outreach (KUO) will take place Fri., March 14, at Main Street United Methodist Church, 830 S. Main St. This free-will donation event takes place from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. for lunch and from 4-6:30 p.m. for dinner and includes live music from Keyton Romero. The bowl auction takes place during dinner, during which attendees will have a chance to vote for and purchase their favorite bowls, decorated by local celebrities. Those in attendance also will be able to select their own bowl to take home with them, created by one of the many KUO UP Program kids.

Fish for Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity will hold a fish fry fundraiser on Fri., March 14, from 4-8 p.m. at Hawg Heaven, 422 W. Defenbaugh. All-you-can eat fish or chicken tenders, with sides, for $15 a ticket for adults and $10 a ticket for children under age 12. Tickets will raise by $2 on the day of the event. Free Throw Contest
The Carver Community Center, in partnership with the Howard County Sports Hall of Fame, will host a Free Throw Shooting Contest from March 17-April 10. Registration is open through March 14 and is $15 per shooter. Over four weeks, competitors in four age divisions will descend upon the Carver Center, 1030 N. Purdum St., to take 25 shots each week. Track your shots to compete for awesome prizes in each age group. First place in each division will win a $100 Visa Gift Card. Second place wins a $50 card, and third place takes home a $25 card. The grade K-2 division will shoot on March 17, 24, 31, April 7. The grade 3-5 division shoots March 18, 25, April 1, 8. The grade 6-8 division shoots March 19, 26, April 2, 9. Kaleidoscope of Gardening
The Howard County Master Gardeners will present A Kaleidoscope of Gardening on Sat., March 15, from 8:45 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Howard County Fairgrounds in Greentown. Join them to learn more about the wonderful world of gardening. Steve Sass and Amanda Smith will present the Ecology of Gardening, while Cinda Gustafson talks about Bees and Whitney Yoerger talks about Birds. Sass and Smith return to talk about Butterflies and Moths, while Karin Anderson will discuss Native Plants. This adults-only event is $35 per person. Trash to Treasure
The Kokomo Art Association will host Vivian Bennett as she offers a Trash to Treasure Junk Journal Workshop on Sat., March 15. Vivian will teach participants how to make a junk journal from recycled, repurposed, and sometimes new materials, from start to finish. Once completed, the one-of-a-kind journal is suitable for personal use or to give as a gift. The class runs from noon until 4 p.m. and costs $62.50 which includes all materials.
