Empty the Shelters
The Kokomo Humane Society, 729 E. Hoffer St., will hold its Empty the Shelters Fall Adoption event through Oct. 15. With the assistance of the Bissell Foundation, adoption fees will be reduced to $50 for dogs and $20 for cats. Glo Swim
The Kokomo Family YMCA will transform its pool into a glowing movie theater where members can float and watch a holiday-themed movie for free. This Glo Swim event takes place on Tue., Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. and is free to YMCA members. Wood Carving Classes
The Eastern Woodland Carvers Club will offer free carving and woodburning classes starting Oct. 24. All supplies will be provided for classes. Carving tools will be available to purchase for take home as well. Veteran carvers will teach carving in the round, relief carving, chip carving, and woodburning. Pioneer Woman in Greentown
On Oct. 25 at 6 p.m., at the Greentown Historical Society, 103 E. Main St., meet a pioneer woman who settled in Liberty Township in 1858. She and her family moved west and settled in the area. The true identity of this historic figure is Sharon Dillman. She is a veteran storyteller who has the ability to bring characters to life. Sharon is the Miami County Farm Bureau Outreach Coordinator of Education Programs and is a retired school teacher of 42 years. She has a Master’s Degree in Education. She researches and writes her own scripts, dresses in costume, and presents educational programs. Don’t miss this presentation as Greentown celebrates 175 years of history.
Essential Skills for Managers
Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo will host Essential Skills for Managers Classes. Learn de-escalation skills, strength-based leadership skills, how to build a foundation for best practices, effective team management, how to develop trust and respect, and situational leadership modeling. YMCA Pickleball Tournament
Grab a paddle and your teammate for the YMCA's first annual Pickleball Tournament on Sat., Oct. 28, at 8 a.m. This doubles tournament is for ages 18 and older. Safety Palooza
The Kokomo Fire Department, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, and Ascension St. Vincent will bring a day of fun to Kokomo on Sat., Oct. 28, with the 2023 Safety Palooza celebration in Foster Park. From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., there will be free kids’ bicycle helmets and smoke detectors given away while supplies last. The department’s fire equipment will be on hand for a touch-a-truck experience. The Greentown Main Street Association will hold a Boobs and Boos block party on Sat., Oct. 28, in support of breast cancer awareness. The Kokomo Humane Society will hold an Autumn Cat-ch Dinner and fundraiser on Sat., Oct. 28, at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Hall at Indiana University Kokomo, 2300 S. Washington St. Join them for a night of great people, a live dessert auction, a small live auction, a New Orleans-inspired dinner, and drinks. Tickets are $60 if ordered before Oct. 21, and $70 after that date. Proceeds will provide for the caring of lost and homeless animals at the humane society. Great Gatsby Dinner/Dance
The Fraternal Order of Police will hold the 68th annual Policeman’s Ball on Sat., Oct. 28, beginning at 7 p.m., at the Elite Banquet Center, 2820 S.
