The Kokomo Wildkats are regional champions. The Kats travelled to Columbia City on Nov. 11 and quickly showed their dominating force on both sides of the ball. The contest was never in doubt, as they rolled the Eagles, 42-13.
While the Kats have become known for their explosive offense this season, it was the defensive unit that commanded attention in this contest. It forced five turnovers in the first half alone, including a fumble less than a minute into the game. Defensive end Brandon Bennett recovered the ball and placed his team in the red zone on the second play from scrimmage. Kokomo never looked back.
The offense was on display as well in the early quarters. Quarterback Evan Beard ran the ball in for a score on the Kats’ second possession of the game, and running back Junior Story later found paydirt with a 32-yard scoring scamper of his own. Wide receiver John Curl hauled in a 25-yard pass just before the half to make the score 28-7.
In the second half, Barker dominated the Eagles, scoring twice on runs of four and 37 yards. He led the Kats with 118 yards on 20 carries. Story added 87 yards rushing, and Keegan Name saw action with 95 yards on 16 carries.
No. 7-ranked Kokomo (12-1) returns home this Friday to face No. 6 New Prairie (12-1) with a trip to the state finals on the line.
