It was an early-season clash between two ranked teams in which the Kokomo Wildkats had to be considered the underdogs, but the Kats rolled into Whiteland High School on Aug. 25 and pulled off a 27-13 win.
Ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, Kokomo was led by quarterback Reis Beard, who scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half and three overall en route to a 122-yard rushing night.
His Whiteland counterpart, Oliver Taylor, suffered a devastating injury in the second quarter, resulting in a 25-minute delay as the young man was carried off on a stretcher.
Running back Tracy Dowling was responsible for Kokomo's other score, scampering 19 yards for a touchdown late in the contest. He finished the game with 94 yards rushing. Beard amassed 122 yards on the ground and another 44 in the air.
With the win, the Wildkats improve to 2-0 on the young season, while Whiteland, formerly ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, fell to 1-1.
Kokomo hosts Logansport (0-2) in a North Central Conference match-up this Friday evening.
