The Kokomo Family YMCA was packed with fun as it held Healthy Kids Day on April 18. The entire community was invited to participate, and a good chunk of it took the YMCA up on the offer.
There were loads of booths in the YMCA’s Community Room, where local vendors promoted healthy living. There was information on good nutrition, healthy hand washing, staying away from tobacco, and exercise. The Kokomo Howard County Public Library helped kids expand their minds, and Barlow’s Barber Shop offered free haircuts.
Down on the gym floor, kids had the chance to hoop it up with the Kokomo Bobkats, or they could navigate an inflatable obstacle course. The swimming pool also offered a Wibit obstacle course. It turns out that kids really like clearing hurdles, hitting the slides, and racing for their best times through the courses.
In the main lobby, parents could collect information on YMCA memberships and services. The Y took registrations for its popular Summer Camp, and one lucky child walked away with a free week of camp. The face-painting table also drew steady interest in the lobby, along with the free popcorn.
Outside the Y, there were activities as well. Ascension St. Vincent and Community Howard Regional Health had ambulances on-site for tours and education, and the Kokomo Fire Department geared up for a visit as well. There was an ice cream truck, cornhole, and other fun activities throughout the morning.
The Kokomo Family YMCA is a nonprofit dedicated to the physical, mental, and spiritual health of the community. The goal is to be accessible to everyone, regardless of social or economic status. Monthly membership fees are reasonable, and there are scholarships available for those individuals and families who may have financial difficulty.
